A well-lit garden isn't just about safety — it transforms how your home looks and feels after dark, extends the use of your outdoor spaces, and adds real value to your property.
Plateau Electrical designs and installs garden and outdoor lighting for homeowners across Sydney's Northern Beaches and North Shore. Whether you want subtle path lighting, dramatic uplighting on feature trees, or a fully integrated outdoor entertaining area with deck and pergola lights, we'll help you get the result you're after.
We work with both 240V mains-powered outdoor lights and 12V/24V low-voltage systems. Our preference — and recommendation for most garden lighting applications — is low-voltage. Here's why:
That said, some applications call for 240V — particularly high-output feature lighting, security lights and certain pergola setups. We'll recommend the right solution for your specific space and goals.

Path and driveway lights improve safety, guide guests to your front door and create a welcoming entrance after dark. We install in-ground, spike-mounted and post-top styles to suit your garden's aesthetic.
Uplighting a feature tree, hedge or garden sculpture can completely transform the look of your property at night. We position spotlights for maximum impact, taking into account beam angle, colour temperature and the natural growth of your plants.
Your outdoor entertaining area should be just as inviting at 8pm as it is at 4pm. We install downlights, strip lighting and pendant-ready points in decks and pergolas, with weatherproof fittings rated for outdoor use.
Water features, garden beds, retaining walls and architectural details all benefit from carefully placed accent lighting. We design the layout around your specific garden to make the most of what you have.
Most of our garden lighting installations use 12V or 24V low-voltage systems — and for good reason.
Low-voltage garden lighting is the preferred approach for residential gardens across the Northern Beaches and North Shore because of its flexibility and safety. A low-voltage transformer connects to your 240V mains supply and steps the power down, making the garden circuit safe to touch and easy to modify.
This means you can:
We specify quality transformers, fittings and cable to ensure your system performs reliably for years. All outdoor installations use IP-rated fittings appropriate for their location, and all work is carried out to Australian Standards.

Yes. Any garden lighting connected to your home's mains supply — including low-voltage systems that use a transformer — must be installed by a licensed electrician in NSW. The transformer connects to 240V, which is licensed electrical work. DIY installation is illegal and can void your home insurance.
Low-voltage systems (12V or 24V) use a transformer to step down mains power. They're safer, more flexible and cheaper to run than 240V. For most residential garden lighting — paths, uplighting, deck lights — low-voltage is our preferred solution. 240V is typically used for high-output security lighting and certain commercial-grade fittings.
It depends on your garden and what you want to achieve. For path lighting, a light every 2–3 metres is a good starting point. For uplighting trees, one or two well-positioned spotlights are often enough. We'll assess your space and recommend a layout before we start.
In many cases, yes. We'll check your existing circuit capacity first. If it can't support additional lights, we can install a new dedicated outdoor circuit from your switchboard — often the cleanest solution anyway.
A typical job — path lights, a few spotlights and a deck area — takes half a day to a full day. More complex installs with multiple zones and additional circuits take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeframe when we quote.
We use quality brands with proper IP ratings, Australian certifications and solid warranties. We don't install cheap imports without certifications — the early failure rate and safety risks aren't worth it. Ask us what we're currently recommending when we visit.
