Before we dive into the process of gas to electric cooktop conversion in Sydney, let’s go over how the new induction cooktops actually work.
Traditional electric cooktops, like the old white Euromaids or Westinghouse’s so many of use grew up with used a large electric heating element which took a while to heat up and did a very poor job (by todays standards atleast) of transferring the heat to the pot or pan.
Inudction Cooktops use an ‘induction coil’ to generate electromagnetic waves (magnetic field) that directly heat suitable pots and pans. This direct transfer of heat reduces thermal loss, heats the pans faster and makes temperature adjustments almost instantaneous.
So, Can I Still Use My Old Pots and Pans?
For the most part, yes! Any flat bottomed steel, stainless steel or ion-plated pan will work perfectly. Unfortunately, the aluminium pans will have to go.
Are Induction Cooktops Better for My Families Health?
Yes! According to researchers from Stanford Undervisty, gas stoves actually have a similar cancer risk as secondhand smoke. Not only did the toxic emmissions accumulate quickly in the home, but they were also found to linger in the air for many hours.
Rangehoods can reduce the concentration of these gases, it’s not perfect nor enough to safely use. Think about the last time you cooked a meal with strong aromas, the smell alone stayed in the kitchen/house for hours afterwards – even with the rangehood at the deafening ‘jumbo jet preparing for takeoff’ setting.

Once you decide to make the switch, you’ll need to navigate the somewhat confusing market for induction stoves. Given the huge range of sizes, styles and features converting to an induction cooktop in Sydney can leave you scratching your head. Selecting the Right Model
We won’t speak too much on features as these are going to come down to personal preference but what I will cover is the number 1 point of frustration when converting from a gas stove to an electric stove in Sydney. That is matching the new unit to the existing cutout.
You’ll need to get the measurement of the existing cutout in your benchtop. There’s a couple of ways to do this. The easiest way (if possible) is to try and lift your existing cooktop up off the bench top. This can be done by peeling it up from the corner or opening the cupboard and pushing up from below. Unfortunately they are often screwed into place and won’t come up.
Failing that, you can again go into the cupboard below and see if you can get a measurement of the cutout from there.
Alternatively if you can find a model number of the existing unit you may be able to find some specifications online.
Once you have that information, I would suggest using a website like Appliances Online. We have no affiliation with them but I do love the filters they have. You can put in your exact specifications and it will show you all the models that will fit.
Ideally, you don’t want to have to make any cuts to the existing benchtop as this will add to your cost and create a potential health risk if there’s silica dust in that benchtop.
The Conversion Process
The proccess of upgrading your cooktop obviously varies from house to house but typically it’s when you hire the right tradies for the job it should be pretty smooth sailing. Typically the plumber will come in and disconnect the gas cooktop, capping off the gas line safely and removing the cooktop.
The skilled electricians at Plateau Electrical will then come in, run a new circuit from your main switchboard to the cupboard below or beside the cooktop. We will unpack your new induction cooktop, connect it to the new circuit, set it up, test it and even show you how to use it. We can then take away the rubbish and boxes it came in and give the area a clean up. You won’t even have to lift a finger. The only thing we won’t do is put on a fresh batch of spag bol once it’s up and running.
