The Fronius Wattpilot Flex is one of Australia's most advanced home EV chargers: a smart wall-mounted unit that integrates directly with your solar system to charge your car on surplus energy rather than drawing from the grid. Plateau Electrical installs the Wattpilot across Sydney's Northern Beaches and North Shore, and we can advise on whether it's the right fit for your home and solar setup.
We work with homeowners who want more from their EV charger than a simple plug point: people who have solar and want to maximise self-consumption, or who are planning a solar installation and want a charger that will make the most of it from day one.
Here's what sets the Wattpilot Flex apart from a standard wall charger:

Most EV chargers draw from the grid at a fixed rate with no consideration of whether your solar panels are producing at the time. The Wattpilot Flex works differently: a CT clamp is fitted at your switchboard to monitor solar generation and household consumption in real time. The charger then adjusts your EV's charging rate in precise increments to match whatever surplus solar is available at that moment.
If a cloud passes over and solar output drops, the Wattpilot reduces the charge rate automatically. When the sun returns, it ramps back up. The result is that as much of your car's charge as possible comes from your own roof rather than the grid, which is particularly valuable if you're on a low feed-in tariff and would otherwise be exporting that surplus for little return.
The Wattpilot works with any solar inverter brand via the CT clamp approach. When paired with a Fronius inverter, the integration is even tighter: both devices communicate through the Solar.wattpilot app, giving you a unified view of solar production, home consumption, battery storage (if installed), and EV charging from a single dashboard.
The Wattpilot Flex Home is available in 11 kW and 22 kW versions. Most Sydney homes with single-phase power will use the 11 kW model, which is more than sufficient for overnight charging and effective solar integration. Homes with three-phase power can install the 22 kW version for significantly faster charge sessions when needed. Both models use a 6m Type 2 cable and are controlled through the same Solar.wattpilot app.
Our team will confirm the right model during the site assessment, factoring in your switchboard capacity, your vehicle's onboard charger rating, and your solar configuration.
Professional installation by a licensed electrician is required for the Fronius Wattpilot Flex, and the quality of that installation matters for both safety and long-term performance. We begin with a site assessment: checking your switchboard capacity, planning the cable route to your preferred mounting location, and confirming whether your existing electrical setup can support the new circuit without any upgrades.
On the day of installation, we mount the unit, run a dedicated circuit from your switchboard, fit and commission the CT clamp for solar monitoring, and walk you through the charging modes and the app before we leave. A standard installation typically takes two to four hours. If your switchboard needs an upgrade to handle the additional load, we can take care of that as part of the same job: our switchboard upgrade service covers everything required.
We install Fronius Wattpilot chargers regularly across the Northern Beaches and North Shore, in areas including Manly, Mosman, Neutral Bay, Dee Why, Frenchs Forest, and surrounds.

How much does Fronius Wattpilot installation cost in Sydney?
The Fronius Wattpilot Flex Home retails at approximately $1,800 to supply. A standard installation on an existing switchboard with adequate capacity and a straightforward cable run typically adds $300 to $600 in labour. We provide a written upfront quote before any work begins, so there are no surprises on the bill.
Does the Fronius Wattpilot work with my existing solar inverter?
Yes. While the Wattpilot Flex integrates most tightly with Fronius inverters through the Solar.wattpilot app, it uses a CT clamp to monitor energy flows and is fully compatible with any solar inverter brand. You do not need a Fronius inverter to benefit from solar surplus charging.
Do I need three-phase power to install the Fronius Wattpilot?
No. The Wattpilot Flex is available in both single-phase (11 kW) and three-phase (22 kW) versions. Most homes on the Northern Beaches and North Shore have single-phase power, which suits the 11 kW model well. We confirm the right configuration during your site assessment.
Is a licensed electrician required to install the Fronius Wattpilot?
Yes, professional installation by a licensed electrician is required in Australia. All Plateau Electrical work is carried out by fully licensed and insured electricians, in compliance with Australian Standards and the relevant New South Wales wiring regulations.
