Is it OK to put a TV above a fireplace?

If you do choose to mount the TV above the fireplace, it’s good to know that most imitation fireplaces are purely for ambience and actually don’t produce much heat, so will be fine under your TV.

But, to be sure, always check the temperatures produced because even imitation fireplaces do produce some heat.

Generally speaking, hanging your TV above the fireplace is a great option to hide the cables and save space in your living room.

Above the fireplace can be a great choice to help declutter the space and use the existing focal point of the room.

If you use your fireplace to warm your living space with wood, gas, electricity or coal then it’s probably not a great idea to hang your TV there because high heat and smoke may damage your TV and speakers.
This includes any smoke that’s not immediately ventilated via the chimney, as it’s likely to cascade over the front of the mantlepiece and linger around your TV and cause damage to the electronics.

Bear in mind, heat damage may void your TV’s warranty.

We suggest to our customers the best place to hang the TV might not be above the mantlepiece, but rather, on another wall.

When choosing the best place, perhaps think about a wall that doesn’t get direct sunlight, that is strong enough to hold the weight of your TV, and that is also in the optimum place for viewing with your chosen furniture arrangement.

In summary:

  • The best place for viewing may not always be above the fireplace
  • Be careful of heat damage to your electronics and devices
  • Ensure the wall is strong enough to hold the TV
  • If possible, choose a wall that doesn’t get direct sunlight

How high should a TV be on a wall?

This is often influenced by three main factors:

  • The space available on the wall
  • The size of your television
  • Your personal preference

Plateau Electrical team will help you work out the best position based on your TV size, room size, furniture arrangement and the overall aesthetic of your living room as part of our installation service.

If you do choose to mount your TV above a feature such as a fireplace, take care to check the height isn’t too high for comfortable viewing. The ideal spot for a TV for a comfortable viewing angle is when the bottom third of the TV is at neutral eye level.

Roughly speaking this is within a metre or two of ground level so your neck isn’t contorted or at an upwards sharp angle when you’re sitting watching TV.

Think about the type of TV, too

The type of TV (curved or flat) as well as the size (compared to the room) are also worth considering. For example, LCD TVs are notorious for being difficult to see if the horizontal angle is more than 30 degrees. You’ll want to mount your LCD TV so that the majority of the screen is front on and you’re not having to view it from too much of an angle.
