Switchboard Upgrades — Northern Beaches & North Shore

DOES YOUR SWITCHBOARD NEED UPGRADING?

Your switchboard is the heart of your home's electrical system. It distributes power to every circuit, and it's where your safety switches and circuit breakers live. If it's not up to scratch, everything else is at risk.

Many homes on the Northern Beaches and North Shore were built decades ago, and their switchboards simply weren't designed for the way we use electricity today. If you're running air conditioning, an EV charger, an induction cooktop, a home office, and multiple devices all at once, your old switchboard may be struggling to keep up.

Here are some signs it's time to upgrade:

  • Your home still has an old ceramic fuse box instead of a modern switchboard
  • Circuit breakers trip frequently, especially when you run multiple appliances
  • You can see scorching, discolouration, or melted plastic on your switchboard
  • There's a burning smell or buzzing/humming sound near the board
  • Your switchboard doesn't have safety switches (RCDs) on all circuits
  • You're planning to add an EV charger, air conditioning, solar, or other high-draw appliances
  • Your home is more than 25 years old and the switchboard has never been touched

If any of these sound familiar, it's worth getting a professional inspection. We see outdated switchboards on the Northern Beaches and North Shore regularly — it's one of the most common jobs we do.

What's Involved in a Switchboard Upgrade?

A switchboard upgrade isn't a one-size-fits-all job — it depends on what you've currently got and what your home needs. Here's the general process when you book with Plateau Electrical:

1. Inspection and quote We inspect your existing switchboard, assess its condition, and discuss what you need. If you're adding new circuits (for an EV charger, cooktop, or air conditioning, for example), we factor that in. You get a fixed, written quote before we start — no hourly rates, no surprises.

2. Switchboard replacement If your board needs replacing, we remove the old unit (including safe disposal of any asbestos metering panels if present) and install a new switchboard to current Australian Standards. We use quality components — no shortcuts.

3. Safety switch (RCD) installation We install individual safety switches on every circuit — power points, lighting, oven, hot water, and air conditioning. This is now the minimum Australian Standard for residential properties and the most important part of any upgrade.

4. Circuit breaker upgrades Old ceramic fuses and outdated circuit breakers are replaced with modern units that provide both overload protection and earth fault protection.

5. Testing, labelling, and certification Every circuit is tested, the board is clearly labelled, and you receive a Certificate of Compliance for the work. We walk you through what's been done and make sure you know how your new switchboard works.

Most standard switchboard upgrades take between half a day and a full day, depending on the complexity. We minimise the time your power is off and always clean up after ourselves.

How Much Does a Switchboard Upgrade Cost?

The cost depends on the condition of your existing switchboard, how many circuits your home has, and whether any additional work is needed (like mains cable upgrades or three-phase conversion).

As a rough guide:

Basic safety switch retrofit — If your switchboard is in reasonable condition but just needs RCDs added to all circuits, this can start from around $600–$800.

Full switchboard replacement — Removing an old fuse box or outdated board and replacing it with a new switchboard, safety switches on all circuits, and modern circuit breakers typically costs between $1,500 and $3,000.

Complex upgrades — If your home has an asbestos metering panel, needs mains cable work, or requires a three-phase upgrade, costs can be $3,000–$5,000 or more depending on the scope.

We always provide a fixed, upfront quote after inspecting your switchboard. No hourly rates, no bill shock. If we find anything unexpected during the job, we'll stop and discuss it with you before proceeding.

Safety Switch Installation

Did you know that almost half of all house fires in NSW are caused by electrical faults? A safety switch — also called an RCD (Residual Current Device) — is your best protection against electric shock and electrical fires.

Safety switches work by monitoring the flow of electricity through a circuit. If they detect a fault — like current leaking to earth through a person or damaged wiring — they cut the power in milliseconds. That speed is what saves lives.

Under current Australian Standards, all domestic circuits in your home need a safety switch installed. This includes power points, lighting, oven, hot water, and air conditioning circuits. Many older Northern Beaches and North Shore homes only have safety switches on some circuits, or none at all.

The difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker: A circuit breaker protects your wiring and appliances from overload. A safety switch protects you from electric shock. You need both — and a modern switchboard upgrade includes both on every circuit.

If you're not sure whether your home has safety switches on all circuits, open your switchboard and look for switches marked "RCD" or with a test button. If you can't see them, or you're unsure, give us a call and we'll inspect it for you.

Electrical Fault Finding

Sometimes the issue isn't the switchboard itself — it's a fault hiding somewhere in your electrical system. If your circuit breakers keep tripping and you can't work out why, that's where our fault-finding service comes in.

Common reasons for persistent tripping include faulty appliances, damaged wiring (especially in older homes), water ingress into circuits, and overloaded circuits that have been pushed beyond their capacity.

Our electricians use professional testing equipment to systematically trace and isolate the fault. Once we've found it, we'll explain what's going on and give you options for fixing it — whether that's a simple repair, a circuit upgrade, or a full switchboard replacement.

Fault finding is one of our specialties. With 18+ years working in Northern Beaches and North Shore homes, we've seen just about every type of fault there is — and we know how to find them efficiently without racking up hours of diagnostic time.

FAQs

Q: How much does a switchboard upgrade cost on the Northern Beaches?

A standard full switchboard replacement typically costs between $1,500 and $3,000, depending on the size of your board and the complexity of the work. If your home needs mains cable upgrades or asbestos removal, costs can be higher. We always provide a fixed quote after inspection.

Q: How long does a switchboard upgrade take?

Most switchboard upgrades are completed in half a day to a full day. Your power will need to be off for a few hours during the work — we'll let you know the timeframe in advance and keep the outage as short as possible.

Q: How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?

Common signs include frequent circuit breaker trips, visible damage or discolouration on the board, a burning smell, buzzing sounds, or still having an old ceramic fuse box. If your home is more than 25 years old and the switchboard hasn't been touched, it's worth getting it inspected.

Q: What's the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?

A circuit breaker protects your wiring and appliances from electrical overload. A safety switch (RCD) protects people from electric shock by cutting power when it detects a fault. Both are essential and are included in a modern switchboard upgrade.

Q: Do I need a switchboard upgrade before installing an EV charger?

Often, yes. An EV charger requires a dedicated circuit, and many older switchboards don't have the capacity to safely support one. We assess your switchboard as part of every EV charger installation quote and can handle the upgrade at the same time.

Q: Is a switchboard upgrade required before selling a home?

It's not a legal requirement in NSW, but many buyers and building inspectors flag outdated switchboards. Upgrading before sale can remove a negotiation point and give buyers confidence in the property's electrical safety.

Q: Do you remove asbestos metering panels?

Yes. Many older Northern Beaches homes have asbestos metering panels. We safely remove and dispose of these as part of the switchboard upgrade, following all NSW regulations for asbestos handling.

Q: Do you provide a certificate after the upgrade?

Yes. Every switchboard upgrade comes with a Certificate of Compliance confirming the work meets current Australian Standards.
